Murphy Crossing Site Plan
1050 Murphy Ave., S.W., Atlanta, Georgia ,30310
During the summer of 2021, I participated in a summer mentorship program with Perkins&Will. Along with 4 fellow mentees, we were given the task of reinventing the Murphy Crossing site. The Murphy Crossing site is an abandoned site adjacent to the Atlanta BeltLine Westside Trail. With no real purpose to the site, it came to our attention that this site needs to complement the BeltLine and become multi-functional for the surrounding neighborhoods. The reinventing of Murphy Ave. alongside the Atlanta BeltLine Westside Trail will not only become a place of relaxation and new productivity, but it will also strongly focus on the creation of jobs. The reinvention of the site will also include a green space component that will provide outdoor seating, with social distancing protocols, and that complements the Atlanta BeltLine Westside Trail and includes access to the Westside Trail. The site includes housing that meets the workforce affordability requirements.

POP-UP MARKET STALLS
The Farmer's market becomes a revitalized adaptive reuse space that provides fresh produce, diverse pop-up stalls, and seating that is welcome for everyone to socialize and eat. The crops will be grown directly from the greenhouse and transported to the market to be sold throughout the warm and cool seasons. The market stalls are organized and grouped into units for greater accessibility and circulation.
SUSTAINABLE
With locally grown food from the greenhouse, there will be on-site composting to help mitigate climate change and return nutrients to the growing field. Recyclable packaging will be provided to reduce the amount of single-use plastics.

HEALTHY COMMUNITY
A diverse range of fresh produce will encourage healthy eating for customers and improve overall wellbeing. Handmade goods and local art will be sold to encourage freedom of expression and interaction.

GROWTH
Increased access to nutritious food will expand the market into a shopping environment for lower and middle-income families.

OUTDOOR MARKETPLACE
Behind the farmer's market is an abundance of market stands that attract residents to connect around the beltline and multi-housing. A winged canopy overlooks the vendors and provides shade along a linear path to activate a community of diverse people. The outdoor market's aim is to bring people to the neighborhood and provide affordable retailing opportunities for small businesses.

GREENHOUSE AND GARDEN
The greenhouses and the garden provide a communal learning environment as well as an open produce lot for the low-income housing surrounding the area. With a controlled growing environment, fresh organic vegetables will be protected and grown throughout the year. This feature engages the community with the redeveloped Murphy Avenue while also providing opportunities for better eating habits and livelihood.
COMMUNITY
Opening up the garden to community and public access allows for more usage and care. It also engages the community with a common meeting ground, while granting fresh affordable produce to individuals in the area.

ACCESSIBILITY
When moving towards the city you tend to lose the ability of being in a close proximity to a farm or market. Creating one in this community grants produce in their own metaphorical backyard.
BIODIVERSITY
Incorporating a variety of plants allow species to thrive longer and promote a cleaner growth.

OUTDOOR OFFICE AND SEATING
Bringing the indoors out with comfortable outdoor meeting spaces that are open for anyone to use, increasing the population's time spent outside. Working in an open environment not only improves productivity but also reduces the spreading of germs and illnesses. It also grants the ability to social distance while still working near each other. The outdoor offices have 2 formats, a single which fits 1-4 people and a deluxe which fits 6-8 people. A walkway path is provided to allow ease of access to these pavilions, side seating is dispersed around the path for a variety of options.
