Throughout the summer of 2021, the SCAD chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS) participated in the 2021 Barbara G. Laurie Student Design Competition. Along with 6 fellow student members, we were tasked with creating a master plan that would use the NOMA Legacy Headquarters as its anchor. With roots in Detroit, it is fitting that NOMA establishes its "Legacy Headquarters + Resource Campus" here to serve the organization, its members, and the hometown community. The “Legacy Headquarters + Resource Campus” will not only serve as a valuable time capsule of Black culture’s impact on the built environment, but also an invaluable asset addressing the challenges of the marginalized community it is positioned in. The design considerations to be considered for the project are to honor the history and culture of Black Detroiters, diverse housing mixed with an emphasis on affordable, multi-generational housing, reimagined public spaces for socially distance and safe gatherings, access to educational resources for all ages, social and recreational uses, ease of mobility, and sustainable design practices.
For our concept, we conducted extensive research and were inspired by Motown Records and how it gave black people a voice and encouragement during the time of the Civil Rights movement. Our design would serve as an incubator for change, which wouldn't create a whole new experience but build upon ad respect the rich history of Detroit. We introduced educational and retail opportunities for all individuals and a Cultural Tech Hub. The Cultural Tech Hub would give individuals access to computers and technology to connect with others. This hub would act as a place to provide these resources for residents and visitors, but also teach them how to perform certain abilities for technology a well.
